In Czech, a handyman is usually called “hodinový manžel”, literally an hourly husband. The name has stuck, but the job is done by women and men alike: hanging shelves, fixing a dripping tap, adjusting a door or assembling a wardrobe.
Most handymen charge by the hour, so it pays to collect all the small jobs and have them done in one visit. You can fit more into an hour than you might expect.
Typical handyman rates
The base rate in 2026 is usually between 300 and 500 Kč an hour. In Prague and other large cities it tends to be at the higher end, in smaller towns at the lower end. Many handymen bill per started half hour or hour, with a minimum visit of one hour.
| Job | Typical price (2026) |
|---|---|
| Hourly rate | 300–500 Kč/h |
| Travel within a city | 0–300 Kč per visit |
| Hanging a shelf, picture or mirror | 150–300 Kč each |
| New silicone around a bath or shower | 600–1,200 Kč |
| Adjusting a window or door | 200–400 Kč each |
| Replacing a tap (labour only) | 400–800 Kč |
Typical market ranges in 2026. They vary by city and job and are for orientation only, not SkillNav prices.
What a handyman can do
- Drilling and hanging: shelves, pictures, mirrors, curtain rails, TV brackets.
- Small plumbing: replacing a tap, a sink trap, a toilet cistern mechanism or seat.
- Flat maintenance: new silicone, adjusting windows and doors, swapping a lock or handle, small plaster repairs.
- Furniture assembly: wardrobes, beds, chests of drawers, kitchen cabinets.
- Seasonal jobs: window seals, insect screens, clearing out a cellar.
What needs a licensed professional
In Czechia, work on electrical installations and gas may only be done by people with the right qualification. That protects you and keeps your home insurance valid. For a new circuit, moving a socket or anything around a gas boiler, look for a qualified electrician or gas fitter.
If you rent, check with your landlord before drilling or changing anything fixed. Many rental contracts require consent for bigger changes.
How to save money
Write a list and send photos before the visit. The handyman can then bring the right tools and materials and will not need to come twice.
Buy the materials yourself or have them brought, whichever works out cheaper. If the handyman does the shopping, the time spent is usually billed too.
For a clearly defined job, such as new silicone, ask for a fixed price. For a mixed list where you do not know what will turn up, an hourly rate is fairer.
What to agree up front
- Hourly rate, minimum visit length and travel cost.
- Who brings the materials and how you pay.
- The list of tasks, so it is clear what fits into the visit.
- What happens if a bigger problem turns up: stop and ask first, or carry on.
